Party Themes

Sometimes it’s easy to think of a theme for a party – your house has an unusual name, or it’s a significant birthday and you ask friends to come as something from that decade.  However, if you’re stuck, here are some ideas that we have costumed in the past:

Arabian Nights
!
Your chance to be a sultan and have a harem.  (Or a Sultana with her body slaves…)  The dance of the seven veils, yashmaks, Turkish delight and big cushions.  Think peacock feathers, brass and silver pots, dim lighting, dark rich colours.

Around the World
!
Japanese Geishas; Chinese Coolies or Cheongsams; Spanish Flamenco dancers or Matadors; Dutch boys and girls; Tyrolean girls and men in lederhosen; Arabs; Indians; Russians and Morris Dancers (Well, what else is English?) Food and décor can be themed.  Travel agents will often supply posters.

Black & White
!

Highwaymen; Policeman; Dalmatian; Butler; French maid; Ghost; Cat; Playing Card; Zorro; Twiggy

Bollywood
!
All the glamour and colour of the Sub Continent.  You can theme the food, get long lengths of cheap colourful fabric to decorate the room (or a gazebo in the garden) and burn incense. Think bright pink, orange, purple and gold.

'Carry on' Films
!

There are over 30 films, so everyone can find something.

Childhood Memories
!
Teddy bears; Rag dolls; Action Man; Winnie the Pooh; Fairies; Ballet dancers; School Uniform; Postman Pat; Pantomime; Play recordings of Nursery rhymes or videos of favourite television programmes. Food can include jelly and ice-cream, twiglets, marmite sandwiches and chocolate finger biscuits.

Famous People

Food & Drink
!
Invite people to come as an item of food, or a drink.  Cocktails include ‘Fallen Angel’ and ‘White Russian’ while lots of people enjoy a Knickerbocker Glory!

Gold Rush
!
Old timers; prospectors; saloon girls; gamblers.  Turn your garden into the Klondike and let them pan for gold. Food can include bangers and beans round the campfire.

Initial Letter

For example ‘P’:  Pirates, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Pink Panther…

Masked Ball
!
As well as costumes than include a mask, we have a wide range of eyemasks.  Also, think of tribal masks, masks of make-up, paper masks, metal masks.

Vicars and Tarts/ Pimps and Bitches
!
Not politically correct, but very popular.  Remember that Vicars can be either sex …. as can tarts!

War Time
!
Uniforms; 1940’s dresses and Spivs.  Food can include Spam Sandwiches!  Put masking tape across the windows, sandbags at the doors and have a recording of Vera Lynn …. and the air raid siren.
